Services
DANS promotes the permanent storage and traceability of research data in the arts and humanities and social sciences. To this end it provides, among others, practical services to researchers and research groups. Data from numerous resources is made freely available by or through the mediation of DANS.
Moreover, DANS can assist in the safe storage of your data, with, for example, its own free archive service EASY. DANS can also assist in reorganizing your group’s or institute’s electronic archive. In addition, on request, DANS organizes symposia, subsidises small data projects and carries out ICT activities on behalf of various research projects.
How can DANS help you?
EASY data archiving and online access to data
The easiest and quickest way to deposit and use data is by means of EASY, the Electronic Archiving System developed by DANS. With EASY all sorts of data and all formats can, in principle, be stored: text, databases, spreadsheets, images and sound.
Persistent Identifiers
Information on the internet can easily get lost, for example when files change name or are stored at a different location. So-called persistent identifiers can be used to minimize this risk of information loss. DANS is involved in the design and implementation of an infrastructure that makes use of persistent identifiers. In this development, DANS cooperates with organizations like SURF and the National Library of The Netherlands (Koninklijke Bibliotheek - KB).
DANS EASY Online Analysis Tool
In addition to EASY archiving system, DANS offers researchers and research organisations the option to publish survey data integrally with documentation via the DANS EASY Online Analysis Tool.
DANS Data Portal
The new DANS Data Portal allows for very specific searching of the Internet for data from several other data collections. It concerns collections of data from the following disciplines: humanities, archaeology, environmental sciences and behavioural and social sciences. At the moment, it is possible to search data collections of about sixty national and international organizations with the Data Portal.
Data Management Plan
In order to meet the researchers’ wishes to be able to access practical information with regard to managing, documenting and sharing data, Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS), has drawn up a Data Management Plan.

A large number of secured micro files of Statistics Netherlands are available free of charge to researchers at institutes which have been given the relevant authorisation under the Statistics Netherlands Act. Students may obtain access to Statistics Netherlands data if they are also officially employed by their university.
Access to data from the European data archives collections
DANS is a partner in international data organisations such as the Council of European Social Science Data Archives (CESSDA). This means that databases from abroad are easily accessible to Dutch researchers.
Access to data of ICPSR
DANS offers direct online access free of charge to data from the largest data archive in the world, the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) in the United States. DANS is the Netherlands’ official representative of the National Membership of ICPSR which means that you can request a free subscription to the services of the ICPSR via DANS.
Research & Development
Owing to the nature of its mission, DANS has a number of specialised R&D staff members among its ranks. They seek, often in conjunction with project partners, solutions to problems concerning storage, access and traceability of data. They can also put their expertise at your disposal or at that of your research institution.
