Humanities – the archaeological collection
The archaeological collection comprises the e-Depot Nederlandse Archeologie, which consists of archived reports and datasets per archaeological organisation and specific projects.
Archaeological datasets
These are digital files containing research data of Dutch archaeologists. The files contain the primary archaeological data of excavations, regional studies and material studies. This concerns completed and published research results, of which the basic data have been made accessible to other researchers by the author(s).
A start has been made with archiving and making available the data of a number of large infrastructural works, such as the Betuwe route, HSL and Maaswerken projects. Universities, municipalities and commercial archaeological companies like ADC ArcheoProjecten, BAAC and RAAP deposit the digital basic data of research they have performed with DANS, in accordance with the Archaeological Quality Standard (Kwaliteitsnorm Archeologie). The trend to make data available to users is clearly continuing, as by now more than 17,000 archaeological datasets have been archived.
Archaeological reports
Another part concerns the archaeological reports of researchers that have been made in the past 15 years. Also in this field, the digitisation wave has struck. Per company, the reports that are available digitally have been digitally archived. This means that each report is provided with sufficient (bibliographic) metadata.
This is the way in which the digital research files of Dutch archaeologists are managed. The e-depot ensures sustainable archiving and access, so that there is no need for future researchers to collect or digitise the data once again.
