Data Contracts

DANS has entered into contracts with various organisations, including the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) and the Dutch Government. As a result of this, new data will become available for reuse on a regular basis.

NWO-DANS Data Contracts
The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) and DANS want to ensure that new research data are archived in a sustainable manner and made available for further research. After having been granted the subsidy, researchers are obliged to enter into a data contract with DANS. The data contract is intended to guarantee accessibility to the data as well as their digital sustainability for additional scientific research. It is based on the General Grant Conditions of NWO,  available in the recently updated 'Regeling Subsidieverlening NWO'. For additional information, please refer to the NWO-DANS Data Contracts Information Brochure (only available in Dutch). Please fill in and sign the form to enter into a data contract and send it as an e-mail attachment to Heiko Tjalsma.

ARVODI Scheme for Data from Central Government
The Dutch government wants to ensure that policy-related research data are archived in a sustainable manner and made available for further research. Once data has been collected, the data are not only of importance to the party that commissioned the research, but they may also be used by others for new analyses. Public access and, as a result of this, the verifiability of scientific research also profits from this. On the basis of new agreements, Ministries are therefore obliged to deposit data from policy-related research at DANS. This obligation has been laid down in the new General Government Terms and Conditions for Public Service Contracts - referred to in Dutch as ‘ARVODI’. Research institutions that conduct data collection projects commissioned by one of the Ministries are obliged to deposit their files at DANS after completion of the project stating the number of the Dutch Research Database (the ‘NOD number’). After the data in EASY have been published officially, the DANS number, the Persistent Identifier, may be communicated to the e-depot of the Royal Library. This is the last step in the procedure in the ARVODI scheme that is required for the purpose of payment by the commissioning Ministry.

Protocol for Depositing Archaeological Data
The obligation applies to all digital documentation of an archaeological research project consisting of text documents, databases, spreadsheets, drawings, GIS files, visual material and/or other computer files. Detailed research data from specialist research must also be transferred to the e-Depot of Dutch Archaeology (EDNA), preferably accompanied by a digital specialist report. The digital databases, in conformity with the Dutch Archaeology Quality Standard and/or the design brief, must be transferred to the e-Depot of Dutch Archaeology through easy.dans.knaw.nl within two years after completion of the research.
All digital data collected by the researcher(s) on their own initiative may be submitted. Submission of the digital files is subject to the corresponding guidelines of the e-Depot. For more information, please visit the website of the e-Depot of Dutch Archaeology at www.edna.nl. Also see the Protocol for Depot Management [available in pdf].
