Specialisation
Heiko Tjalsma specialises in the field of digital archiving (the long-term preservation of digital information), including metadata systems and historical information science.
He studied Social and Economic History at Leiden University. He went on to specialise in historical demography with the Cambridge Group for the History of Population and Social Structure.
He then returned to Leiden University, where he lectured on the use of IT applications in the historical sciences, including social and economic history. In addition, from 1990, he worked at the Netherlands Historical Data Archive (NHDA) and from 1997 on at the Netherlands Institute for Scientific Information Services (NIWI) and from mid-2005 at DANS in the capacity of Senior Expert in Research Data. His field of expertise is the long-term preservation of (research) data files. He taught at several (postdoctoral and other) courses focusing on digital archiving and data documentation. Presently he is working in the fields of access to data, legal issues concerning research data, trusted digital repositories and cost models in digital data archiving.
