MIXED: Migration to Intermediate XML for Electronic Data
Digital archives have to store their data sets over time and that poses an extra challenge: ensuring data sets remain usable while at the same time the software, with which the data has been made, becomes obsolete. The software project MIXED is aimed at a practical solution, particularly for data sets from research in the social sciences and literature studies.
The method selected translates the data sets on receipt into a well defined and clear format. That means that conversions from the regular data formats to interim formats have to take place and vice versa, as, on request, the data will again have to be supplied in a regular format. The project is restricted to tabular data: MIXED only handles data which is given in tables, such as databases and spreadsheets.
An important factor is that the method developed finds approval among data managers and data producers. If that is the case, MIXED may become a service provider that makes data sets durable. The quality of the future MIXED will therefore be determined by the number of regular formats recognised by MIXED. Consequently, the software is being structured as a service-oriented architecture with plug-ins for the various file types. External parties can write plug-ins that can be used in all the existing MIXED implementations.
