Connecting ARchaeology and ARchitecture in Europeana (CARARE)
The European project CARARE is a collaboration of 29 European institutions and organizations to make two million objects in the field of archeology and architecture accessible through the website Europeana.
The purpose of CARARE (Connecting Archaeology and Architecture in Europeana) is to connect a large number of national databases and archives of digital archaeological and architectural material. And to connect these with the European digital cultural portal Europeana. DANS is one of 29 partners in the project and will add the e-depot for Dutch archaeology (EDNA) to the project, and thus to Europeana. In addition to data archives, cultural heritage agencies and archaeological museums from twenty European countries are involved in the project. The Greek and English partners of DANS in the European infrastructure DARIAH, Digital Curation Unit and Archaeology Data Service participate in CARARE.
As part of the project, which lasts three years, a total of two million objects are made accessible to the whole of Europe. That's a significant amount compared to the four million objects that the European website currently has to offer. The objects are geographically referenced offering the possibility to create maps for commercial, tourist or scientific use.
