CESSDA Major Upgrade

With this project the Council of European Social Science Data Archives (CESSDA) aims to substantially improve the existing website and service provision. The objective is an innovative European infrastructure for the social sciences, where scientists can find data, tools, advice and exchange knowledge.

The European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) included the CESSDA Major Upgrade in the Roadmap 2006, an overview of projects which are considered crucially important for the European research. The Roadmap comprises another four important initiatives in the arts and humanities and social sciences, including a similar proposal for a data infrastructure for language resources (CLARIN) and arts and humanities (DARIAH).

A request for financing of the preparatory activities was submitted in May 2007 to the European Commission (FP7 – Capacities – Infrastructures). In August 2007 it was approved and contract negotiations are currently in the final stage. The English UKDA will coordinate the two-year preparatory project. The project will officially start with a kick-of meeting on 14-15 January 2008 at the UKDA in England. The actual upgrade will start in 2010.
