Census data 1795-1971

Since 2006, DANS takes care of the concluding phase of the project Dutch Census Data 1795-1971. One of the tasks is keeping the web site www.volkstelling.nl up to date; it provides access to data of over 40,000 pages of the published censuses.

The project commenced as an extensive data project in which four institutes that are interested in data cooperated closely between 1997 and 2005, namely the Netherlands Institute voor Scientific Information Services (NIWI), Statistics Netherlands, the International Institute for Social History (IISG) and the Foundation Historische Databank Nederlandse Gemeenten (HDNG). Owing to the project, researchers can now consult information regarding the censuses and freely download the data from the website in the form of Excel tables, PDF files and images.

Together with Statistics Netherlands, DANS is currently working on setting up a follow-up project for, among other things, digitizing and unlocking the handwritten tables of the censuses at neighborhood level, which Statistics Netherlands has available.
