Light on green for European archeological project CARARE

The project CARARE, in which 29 European institutions and organizations will cooperate toward making two million items in the area of archeology and architecture accessible via Europeana, has received approval from the European Commission.

CARARE (Connecting ARchaeology and ARchitecture in Europeana) has the intention to link a large number of national databases and archives with digital archeological and architectural material to each other, but especially to the European digital culture showcase Europeana. DANS is one of the 29 partners in the project and will contribute the archeological depot EDNA to the project or, in other words, to Europeana. In addition to data archives, cultural-heritage organizations and archeological museums in twenty European countries are involved in the project. The Greek and British partners of DANS in the European infrastructure project DARIAH, Digital Curation Unit and Archaeology Data Service, are also part of CARARE.

Two million items will be made available throughout Europe within the framework of the project, which will take three years. That number is considerable when compared with the four million currently offered by the European web site. The objects will be referenced geographically, enabling the production of maps for use in commerce, tourism or research.
